Flashes Finish Opening Weekend at Clarion

CLARIION, PA- Louis Newell went 5-1 on the day and earned a fifth-place finish, leading the Golden Flashes at the season-opening Clarion Invitational.
Newell, a Pitt transfer, made his Golden Flashes debut on Sunday and made it a memorable one. After dropping his first match of the day, Newell picked up a pair of victories by decision and added a major decision victory. He won his final five matches of the day to earn that fifth-place title.
Freshman Enrique Munguia won his first two matches of the day, both by decision in his Golden Flashes debut, winning 7-0 and 11-6. Fellow 157-pounder Robert Pryhocki went 2-2 in his Flashes debut. The Campbell transfer lost his first match, but rallied to win his next two, including a fall for his first win of the day.
Mason Karpinski had a 2-2 day at 165 pounds that included a fall amongst his two victories. Tyler Bates had a strong start to his season, winning both his matches with falls on Sunday.
At heavyweight, the Flashes were led by a 3-2 day for Andy Garcia. Garcia picked up a pair of victories on Sunday by decision and added a major decision as well. Blake Chrisman earned a pair of victories by decision as well on Sunday.
The Golden Flashes are back in action next weekend when they travel to North Carolina to compete in the Appalachian State Open next Sunday. The list of Kent State records on Sunday are below, full results can be viewed here.
