CLEVELAND – Colin McCracken and Casey Santoro have been selected as Mid-American Conference Scholar-Athletes of the Week for competition from Dec. 6-12, as Kent State swept the weekly honors.
The Scholar-Athlete of the Week Award is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during that week's competition. The winners are selected by a representative of the MAC's Faculty Athletics Representatives (FARs).Â
McCracken went 3-1 and finished second in the 184-pound bracket at the Cleveland State Open on Saturday. He followed a dominant 15-0 technical fall victory in the opening round with a 3-1 decision over CSU's DeAndre Nassar in a quarterfinal match. McCracken then earned a 6-2 decision against Central Michigan's Ben Cushman to advance to the championship, where he lost to Indiana's Donnell Washington, 16-11.
Santoro notched the first triple-double in Kent State basketball history and set a new career-high in nearly every statistical category while leading the Flashes to a pair of victories. She shot 63.2% overall from the field, including 72.7% from behind the three-point arc, while averaging 17.5 points, 9.0 rebounds and 6.5 assists per game for the week. Santoro had a performance for the record book Saturday against Clarion, scoring 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting to go with 10 rebounds, 10 assists and two steals. In a victory over Duquesne earlier in the week, she matched her career-high with 19 points while grabbing eight boards and registering a team-high three assists.
Kent State's seven Scholar-Athlete of the Week Award selections are the most in the conference as the first semester comes to a close. The Flashes have had four male winners and three female winners. No other MAC school has received more than three total selections.
