CLEVELAND, Ohio – Following an impressive first weekend of action, Kent State junior Erin Gardner has been named East Division Defensive Player of the Week and redshirt junior Alex Haffner has been named East Division Setter of the Week, the Mid-American Conference office announced Monday afternoon.
Gardner averaged 5.71 digs per set and was the stabilizing force of a Golden Flashes defense that held the high-powered Chippewas' attack to a .166 hitting percentage. She had 17 digs in a 3-0 win on Thursday and added 23 digs during Kent State's 3-1 win on Friday. This is the fourth career Defensive Player of the Week honor for Gardner, who currently ranks 10th nationally in digs per set.
Haffner is the national assists per set leader after averaging 14.23 over seven sets against Central Michigan. Her decision-making helped the Flashes record 16.14 kills per set and a .278 hitting percentage, which rank third and 18th, respectively, in the country. Haffner's 58 assists on Friday are tied for the second-most in a four-setter this year, and she added a career-high four aces. She opened the season with 42 assists and 12 digs in a sweep on Thursday. This is Haffner's second career Setter of the Week honor.
The Flashes are scheduled to travel to Buffalo for a two-match series on February 4-5.
