Two Golden Flashes Named MAC Volleyball Athletes of the Week

CLEVELAND, Ohio โ For the second time this season, Kent State volleyball student-athletes Alex Haffner and Savannah Matthews both earned Mid-American Conference East Division Player of the Week honors. Haffner was named Setter of the Week for the third time and Matthews was named Offensive Player of the Week for the second time.
The duo helped lead the Golden Flashes (8-1) to a 2-1 week, including a pair of 3-0 wins at Toledo on Saturday and Sunday.
Haffner, a redshirt junior, averaged 11.27 assists and 2.91 digs per set. She totaled 40 assists in helping the Kent State attack post a season-best .350 hitting percentage against the Rockets on Saturday. For the season, Haffner is the MAC leader in assists per set (12.09), which ranks third in the nation. She has led the Golden Flashes to the conference's top hitting percentage (.263) and 14.39 kills per set. This is Haffner's fifth career Setter of the Week honor.
Matthewsย continued her stellar sophomore campaign with averages of 5.36 points, 4.91 kills and 4.45 digs per set. She started the week with 20 kills and 20 digs against Eastern Michigan to become the first Golden Flash with a 20-20 performance since 2016. Matthews followed with 17 kills in both of Kent State's 3-0 wins at Toledo and recorded a career-high .536 hitting percentage in Saturday's series opener. She ranks 36th nationally in kills per set (4.31).
The Flashes will host unbeaten Bowling Green for two matches inside of the Basketball and Volleyball Development Center on Thursday, February 25 and Friday, February 26.
