KENT, OH- Four Kent State pitchers combined for 25 strikeouts and the offense rapped out a combined 23 runs and 27 hits in a 6-1 and 17-5 double header sweep of Tennessee Tech on Saturday at Schoonover Stadium.
GAME ONE: Kent State 6 Tennessee Tech 1
Luke Albright struck out 10 in five innings of work to pick up his first win of the season in the seven-inning opener on Saturday. Albright surrendered just four hits and a solo home run in his second strong performance in as many starts this season.
Kent State broke through in the second inning, plating three runs. Collin Mathews got things started with a single and quickly stole second. Michael McNamara brought him home with his first collegiate hit, a double to right center. After a Cam Touchette walk, Ben Carew hit a ball down the right field line that fell between three Tennessee Tech fielders for a two-run single.
The Golden Eagles got on the board in the third with a solo homer, but the Flashes answered in the bottom of the fourth. Mack Timbrook ripped a double down the right field line and came into score on a Touchette single. Kent State added single tallies in the fifth on a Kevin Dobos ground out and another in the sixth on Justin Miknis ground out. Jack Zimmerman got the final six outs of game one to earn the save.
GAME TWO: Kent State 17 Tennessee Tech 5
The Golden Flashes wasted little time in game two as the offense fired on all cylinders. Michael Turner belted a two-run homer down the right field line in the first inning to get things started. Collin Matthews added a solo shot of his own in the second to put Kent State up 3-0. Tennessee Tech took advantage of a Kent State error in the fourth, using the extra out to score two unearned runs on a wall-scraping double. Kent State responded in a huge way, sending 12 men to the plate and scoring seven times in the bottom of the fourth. The highlight of the inning was a two-run triple for Mack Timbrook that chased Tech starter Connor Adams.
The Flashes did not take it easy on the Tech bullpen. The Flashes scored one more in the fifth, three in the sixth, two in the seventh and one in the eighth. Perhaps the most impressive swing of the evening belonged to Josh Mrozek. Mrozek came in cold off the bench in the eighth inning and belted the first pitch he saw well over the scoreboard in right field for an impressive pinch-hit solo home run.
The offensive explosion was more than enough for the tandem of Ryan Lane and Collin Romel. Lane got the start and went the first five innings. Lane held the Golden Eagles to just four hits and two unearned runs while striking out five and earned his first victory of the season. Despite coming into an 11-2 ballgame, Romel earned the save by going the final four innings. The southpaw allowed three runs, only one was earned, four hits and struck out nine.
The victories even the Golden Flashes record at 2-2 while Tennessee Tech falls to 2-3. The two teams will meet again on Sunday afternoon, with a first set for one p.m.
