Flashes Shut Down Zips' Attack for Tenth Straight Wagon Wheel Win
3/7/2021 5:32:00 PM | Women's Soccer
KENT, Ohio – The Kent State women's soccer team (2-0-0) posted another shutout to start the season, winning their 10th straight game against Akron (0-2-0) on Sunday with a 1-0 scoreline at Zoeller Field at Dix Stadium.
The Golden Flashes' defense stifled the Zips' attack all afternoon, holding them to just two shots on goal. The defensive unit of Tianna Harris, Riley Ford, Dalaney Ranallo, Khyla Porter, and Keyosha Donkor did an excellent job of eliminating shooting opportunities for Akron and midfielder Maddie Holmes won a number of 50-50 balls in the midfield to control the game for Kent State. The shutout marks the first time since 2004 that Kent State has opened the two straight shutouts.
Redshirt senior Yasmine Hall continued her excellent return from injury, scoring her second goal of the season. She played a nice one-two passing combination with Amanda Winquist and, after getting the ball back, cut inside onto her right-foot to curl her shot around the Zips' goalkeeper for the 1-0 lead in the 61st minute.
The Flashes held on for the final half-hour, and the defense made sure goalkeeper Sarah Melén did not have a whole lot to deal with as she earns her second shutout of the season, finishing with two saves. The win also marks the first time since 2017 that the team has won their first two Mid-American Conference games in a season.
Kent State will be back in action next Sunday as they travel to Oxford for a 1p.m. kick-off against the Miami Redhawks.
