KENT, Ohio — Director of Track and Field/Cross Country Bill Lawson announced the addition of Alex Bloom as an assistant coach for the Kent State track and field program. A 2018 All-American in the heptathlon, Bloom will assist with training Golden Flashes student-athletes in the jumps and combined events.
"We're extremely pleased and excited to welcome Alex Bloom as our new assistant coach here at Kent State," Lawson stated. "Alex was an All-American when he competed at Cincinnati and comes highly recommended from the staff at the University of Miami after helping their program this past season. He will be assisting with the jumps, women's multis and men's decathlon, and brings a fresh and young perspective to those events. Alex also possesses great communication skills and has experience in assisting with recruiting operations."
Bloom joined the Hurricanes' coaching staff as a volunteer assistant in January and assisted daily with jumps and combined events training while assisting with the sprints and hurdles group as needed. Student-athletes he coached set four school records and two qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships and U.S. Olympic Trials. Michelle Atherley placed second in the heptathlon to lead Miami's women's team to a tie for 19th at the national meet.
Prior to this, he served as a volunteer assistant for two seasons at Cincinnati. Bloom worked primarily with student-athletes in the combined events and high jump, but also assisted with the throws, horizontal jumps and sprints groups. He helped with several office duties including the development of training programs and allowable recruiting activities. During his time on staff, Bearcats student-athletes set school records in the men's indoor heptathlon and women's indoor high jump and Loretta Blaut placed third in high jump at the 2019 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships.
As a student-athlete at Cincinnati, Bloom earned Second Team All-America honors in the heptathlon during the 2018 indoor season and owns school records in men's heptathlon and indoor high jump. He won two American Athletic Conference titles in the decathlon and added a high jump title. His achievements in the classroom resulted in a pair of USTFCCCA All-Academic honors.
Bloom graduated from Cincinnati with a Bachelor of Science in exercise and fitness in August 2018 and earned his master's degree in coaching education and athlete development from Xavier in August 2020.
