Bulls Edge Flashes in MAC Home Opener

KENT, OHIO- Kent State dropped a nip-and-tuck dual to the Buffalo Bulls on Sunday, 27-9, spoiling the Golden Flashes 2022 home opener.
The Bulls won three of the four matches that went into extra time, won another as time expired and withstood a last-second surge from Jacob Cover in the final match of regulation.
Jake Ferri kept his hot streak going, winning eight of his last nine matches, knocking off Tristan Daugherty, 7-5. Ferri built a 6-3 lead and got a late escape to hold off Daugherty in a fast-paced third period and earned his 17th win of the season for his efforts.
Louis Newell got win number 16 of the season, earning a tough 3-2 victory over Ben Freeman. It was a defensive struggle for much of the match, with the only points through the first five minutes coming on a pair of escapes. Newell got a late takedown and held off Freeman for the one-point win.
The bout of the day was between Colin McCracken and Pete Acciardi at 184 pounds. Much like the Newell match, escapes were the only scoring for much of this one. Neither wrestler could find an edge in regulation, and it went to sudden victory tied at one. The first extra period mimicked regulation and McCracken finally got an advantage in the second extra frame. In the up position, he never let Acciardi escape, and while not scoring, set the tone for the final 30 seconds of the match. In the third extra frame, McCracken earned the escape point, a two-point take down and a four-point near fall to emerge with an 8-1 victory.
Kent State is back in action on Thursday night, hosting Cleveland State for another MAC dual. Match time for the local rivals is set for 7 p.m. at the M.A.C Center.
