KENT, Ohio - The Kent State gymnastics team plays host to Cornell and Rutgers for Military Appreciation Night Friday at 7 p.m. at the M.A.C. Center.
ABOUT THE FLASHES
Kent State enters Friday night's contest at 3-0 for the season thus far. The Golden Flashes picked up two of those victories in their first meet of the year, when they hosted Northern Illinois and SEMO. In that meet, KSU finished with a total score of 195.300, their best first-meet finish since 2004 and second best ever. That huge opening day statement came thanks in large part to the efforts of people like sophomore Kyndall Gilbert, junior Olivia Amodei, and junior Rachel DeCavitch, who all posted high scores on their given events. Gilbert's 9.875 was good enough to serve as both her personal best and an all-time team high on the event.
However, Gilbert would then go on to top that score in the very next meet, when Kent State traveled to Ball State Sunday. In an otherwise middle-of-the-road performance by the Flashes, Gilbert notched a score of 9.900 on the vault, raising the program record by 0.025 from the previous week. And despite the fact that the Flashes barely squeaked out a victory in this one, only beating the Cardinals by 0.075, the team has upward momentum that they're looking to continue to ride as the season progresses. And a good place to start building upon their successes from the first two meets is at home on Friday night, against Cornell and Rutgers.
ABOUT THE BIG RED
Cornell enters the meet having lost all of their contests thus far. They came in fourth out of four teams at the Lindsey Ferris Invitational January 16 with a score of 188.825, before falling at home to West Chester Sunday, 192.475 to 191.900. The Big Red's highest score on any event this season is 9.850, which was achieved on beam by Regina Walton and on floor by Kate Michelini.
ABOUT THE SCARLET KNIGHTS
Rutgers has had varied results thus far in the 2022 campaign. The Scarlet Knights started off slow, coming in fourth place out of four teams in their opening meet and finishing at 192.075. But in their second meet of the season, Rutgers came in second out of four teams, hitting the mark of 194.550. Yet another win came Saturday, when the Scarlet Knights defeated Maryland, scoring an impressive 195.550. Belle Huang has the season high score for the Knights, having posted a near-perfect 9.950 on floor.
