Late Rally Comes Up Short Against Bobcats

KENT, Ohio – The Kent State men's basketball team (7-7, 2-2 MAC) saw its second-half comeback fall short against Ohio (12-2, 3-0 MAC) by a final score of 80-72 on Friday night in Athens at the Convocation Center.
The Golden Flashes trailed by as many as 18 points in the second half but never quit. Trailing 13 with 6:57 to play, the Flashes used an 11-0 run to pull within two, 63-61, with 4:00 to play. After an Ohio bucket, Malique Jacobs drilled two free throws. A Ben Roderick three followed by a Jason Carter deuce edged the Bobcats up seven with two minutes to play.
Despite the fierce late-game rally, the Flashes never got closer than five the rest of the night. Ohio hit nine free throws over the final 1:47 to secure the victory and stay undefeated in Mid-American Conference play.
Sincere Carry led the Flashes and tied a season high with 26 points. He tied for the team lead with eight rebounds and led the team with six assists, all in the second half. He also added two steals. For Carry, it was his fifth 20-plus point game of the season and third in four MAC contests.
Malique Jacobs added 16 points and eight rebounds while leading the team with three steals. Andrew Garcia recorded a season-high nine points and five rebounds.
Mark Sears led the Bobcats with a game-high 28 points. Ben Vander Plas added 20 points and hit six three-point field goals.

Kent State will return to the MACC for back-to-back games against Northern Illinois on Tuesday, Jan. 11, and against rival Akron on Friday, Jan. 14.
