KENT, Ohio – In a battle between two teams tied for third place in the Mid-American Conference standings, the Kent State soccer team took down Bowling Green 1-0 at Zoeller Field at Dix Stadium on Thursday night.
The Golden Flashes (4-6-4, 4-1-2 MAC) extend their unbeaten streak to four games and snap a seven-game slid against the Falcons with the win, while Bowling Green (5-5-3, 3-2-2 MAC) loses after a pair of 4-0 wins last week.
After a scoreless first half, redshirt senior Tianna Harris was able to give the Flashes the lead. In the 49th minute, sophomore Siena Stambolich sent a corner kick into the box and found Harris, who headed the ball over the goal line for her first of the season. Harris has tallied nine goals in her illustrious career in Kent.
The back line of Harris, junior Dalaney Ranallo, sophomore Joey Skillen, and freshman Abby Breitschuh had one of their strongest performances of the year to secure the victory. The defense held the Falcons' strong offensive attack at bay and cut out scoring chances early.
The Falcons held the advantage over the Flashes in shots (9-4) and shots on goal (5-3), but the Flashes' defense ensured that their slim advantage in the second half was enough to secure the victory. Harris, Stambolich, and freshman Kelsey Salopek led the Flashes in shots on goal.
Goalkeeper Sarah Melén tallied five saves en route to her fourth shutout of the season.
The win marked the 200th career victory for head coach Rob Marinaro. Marinaro has been with the Kent State soccer program since its inception and has served as head coach for 22 seasons.
Kent State will now hit the road for a Sunday matchup with Northern Illinois on Oct. 16. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
