
Volleyball Posts 3-0 Victory to Begin Crystal Clinic Wagon Wheel Challenge Series

KENT, Ohio – Kent State recorded a season-best .402 hitting percentage in a dominant win over rival Akron, 3-0 (25-21, 25-17, 25-19) in a Crystal Clinic Wagon Wheel Challenge contest Friday evening at the M.A.C. Center.
The Golden Flashes (12-6, 3-4 MAC) were led by a quartet of pin hitters who combined for 43 kills and a .455 hitting percentage. Freshman Mackenzie McGuire posted a team-high 13 kills and senior Savannah Matthews was right behind with 12. Freshman Mia Soerensen was unstoppable from the right side, hitting .647 with 11 kills. Senior Taylor Heberle added seven kills on nine swings for a .778 hitting percentage.
Graduate student Alex Haffner and sophomore Kiersten Kraus split time orchestrating the attack. Haffner finished with 24 assists and Kraus totaled 12 assists and a pair of kills.
Graduate student Erin Gardner paced the defense with eight digs and Kraus was right behind with seven.
Matthews, who finished with six digs, tallied the 1,000th of her career during the opening set. The outside hitter is now the sixth Kent State player all-time to total 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs.
Kent State aims for its third straight season sweep, and seventh victory overall, against rival Akron on Saturday when the teams battle at 4 p.m. at the M.A.C. Center.
