TOLEDO, Ohio - The Golden Flashes jumped out to an early lead but the hometown Rockets rallied for a 52-31 victory at the Glass Bowl on Saturday afternoon.
Kent State started lightning fast in this one, scoring on each of its first three drives. Marquez Cooper and Collin Schlee capped off the first two drives with their first of two first-half rushing touchdowns. Sandwiched in between the scores was a solid three-and-out by the defense, putting the Flashes up 14-0 early. Montre Miller made a huge defensive play on the Rockets' second series, stripping and recovering the ball at the Toledo 19-yard line, setting up a short field for the offense. Cooper needed just one play, strolling in on the first play of the drive to make it 21-0 Flashes.
Schlee added his second score of the game early in the second quarter, again calling his own number and scoring on a 10-yard draw. His second touchdown of the day answered a Rockets score and made it 28-7 Flashes early in the second. Daequan Finn got going for the Rockets in the second quarter. The Toledo signal caller flung three touchdown passes to three different receivers as the Rockets rallied to tie the game at 28. Kent State was able to pick up a key third down on a Schlee scramble, setting up a short field goal for Andrew Glass as the half expired, and Kent State led 31-28 at the intermission.
Toledo's second quarter momentum carried into the second half as they tied the score early in the third. The Flashes drove into field goal range on the ensuing drive, but Andrew Glass' kick was pushed left by the wind. Finn kept his hot hand going, tossing three more second half touchdowns as Toledo pulled away.
Marquez Cooper paced the offense, rushing for 166 yards on 31 carries with two scores. Nico Bolden and Marvin Pierre led the defensive effort, totaling 14 and 11 tackles, respectfully.
The Flashes now sit at 2-5 overall and 1-2 in the MAC. Kent State returns home for two straight conference games, starting with the Wagon Wheel rivalry game next Saturday. Kick-off is set for noon from Dix Stadium and will air on ESPN+ and the Kent State Radio Network.
