KENT, Ohio – In a battle for sole possession of second place in the Mid-American Conference standings, the Kent State soccer team drew with the visiting Ball State Cardinals 0-0 on Thursday night at Zoeller Field at Dix Stadium.
The Golden Flashes (4-6-6, 4-1-4 MAC) extend their unbeaten stretch to six games, while Ball State (6-4-6, 5-1-3 MAC) keeps its two-point advantage over the Flashes in the conference table.
The two squads fought a physical match up and down the pitch for the full 90 minutes. Kent State controlled possession in the closing minutes of the game and created a beautiful chance for what would have been the golden goal.
Redshirt senior Tianna Harris fired a strike from just outside the 18-yard box the hit the crossbar just over the fingers of the Ball State keeper. The ball found its way to the feet of redshirt junior Lauryn Arruda, whose one-timer flew just over the crossbar and out of play.
The Flashes' back line of Harris, Dalaney Ranallo, Joey Skillen, and Abby Breitschuh had another strong game, holding the Ball State attack to just five shots and only one shot on goal. Goalkeeper Sarah Melén saved the lone shot on goal en route to her fifth shutout of the season
In the box score, sophomore Siena Stambolich led the Flashes with four shots, while Arruda and sophomore Alisa Arthur tallied a pair of shots each. Kent State held the advantage over Ball State in shots (13-5) and corner kick opportunities (5-4).
The Flashes next hit the field on Sunday, Oct. 23, for the final regular season road contest of the year against Central Michigan. First touch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
