Volleyball Drops Opener at Ball State

MUNCIE, Ind. โ Kent State fell to first-place Ball State, 3-0 (15-25, 19-25, 17-25), Thursday evening in a Mid-American Conference volleyball match at Worthen Arena.
The Golden Flashes (13-12, 4-10 MAC) were unable to slow down the Cardinals' attack with a season-low two blocks while allowing their highest hitting percentage (.340) of the season.
Freshman Mia Soerensen continued her stellar play in recent contests and led the team with 11 kills and a .450 hitting percentage. Freshman Mackenzie McGuire added nine kills. Graduate student Alex Haffner totaled 25 assists while running the offense.
Graduate student Erin Gardner tallied 12 digs to lead the defense. Senior Gracey Jarecke added 10 digs.
How it Happenedโฆ
ย ย ย Set 1: Lana Strejcek posted kills on the first two points of the night to put Kent State ahead 2-0. Ball State took its first lead, 5-4, on back-to-back blocks. Following a kill by Danie Tyson, the Cardinals regained the lead for good on a service error. Ball State continued its strong block at the net and totaled five rejections in the set.
ย ย ย Set 2: The Cardinals led 15-14 at the media break, as neither team was able to leadย by more than two points in the first half of the set. Ball State won the next four points and began to pull away.
ย ย ย Set 3: Mia Soerensen led the charge with a trio of kills as Kent State battled back from an early five-point deficit to lead 10-9. The Flashes managed to scored consecutive points just once the rest of the way.

Kent State and Ball State will finish the weekend series at 6 p.m. on Friday.
