KENT, Ohio – Alexandre Malanda and Drew Johnson posted top-five all-time marks in program history as Kent State concluded competition Saturday at the Doug Raymond National Qualifier inside the Kent State Field House.
Malanda won the men's triple jump with a mark of 52'-2.5", which puts him fourth on the Golden Flashes' all-time indoor performance list. Competing in the event for the first time as a collegian, and only second time in any event, the Paris native flew further than 51' on all four of his measured attempts, a distance only five Kent State athletes had recorded previously.
Johnson crossed the finish line in a personal-best time of 8:18.27 to win the men's 3,000-meter run. He is the third Flash to post a sub-8:20 time this season, something only six others had done coming into the season.
Baidy Ba led the way in an impressive showing by Kent State in the men's 800-meter run. Ba's push over the final 300 meters allowed him to get the victory in 1:53.04. Trey Double (1:53.35), Ethan Yost (1:53.83), Quintin Cooks (1:54.11), Jacob Mirabell (1:55.39) and Michael Arner (1:56.50) claimed the third through seventh place spots.
Kent State swept the 4x400 meter relay races. On the men's side, Jonathan Solomon, Korie Davis II, Cooks and Asa Hodrick finished in a time of 3:16.81. Leah Pasqualetti, Mi'Angel Daniels, Alexandria Verbancic and Ruby Greenwood sprinted to victory in the women's race with a time of 3:52.08.
Greenwood added a second-place finish individually, running an indoor personal-best time of 56.36 seconds in the women's 400-meter dash. Lillie Franks had the Flashes' other runner-up showing on the day, clearing 5'-6" in the women's high jump.
Three additional Kent State athletes posted third place finishes on Saturday. Gabby Bailey took third in the women's shot put with a mark of 53'-4.5" on her final attempt. Anthony Milliner's leap of 48'-11" was good for third in the men's triple jump. Jaheim Jones clocked a season-best time of 6.87 seconds in the 60-meter dash.
The Flashes will be back in action next Saturday, Feb. 19 as they host the Jud Logan Memorial Tune Up starting at 9:30 a.m.
