About the Flashes
Kent State, which was picked second in the 2022 Mid-American Conference softball preseason coaches' poll, return to competition for the first time since going 2-3 at the FGCU Kickoff Classic on opening weekend (Feb. 11-13). Four of those games were decided by a single run, beginning with a 5-4 walk-off victory over LIU in the eighth inning and concluding with a 3-2 walk-off loss to Boston College.
Fifth-year designated player Brenna Brownfield led the Golden Flashes at the plate with a .375 batting average. Brownfield hit a pair of doubles and was one of three players with a team-high two RBIs. Senior outfielder Brooklyn Whitt totaled five hits and led Kent State with two runs scored. Sophomore Jessica LeBeau went 3-for-3 and blasted her first collegiate home run in the opener against LIU.
Freshman Kylie Ringler (1-0) shutout LIU in Saturday's first game, becoming the first Flashes freshman to hold an opponent scoreless in her debut since Markie Pozzuto in 2008 (five innings). Redshirt senior Andrea Scali (0-1) recorded 14 strikeouts and went six innings in both of her starts. Scali posted a 1.17 earned run average and held opposing hitters to a .178 batting average. Making her first appearance since the 2020 season, redshirt junior Anilese Kelly (1-0) threw two scoreless innings to earn the victory in opener against LIU. Kelly totaled five innings over three relief appearances and had a 1.40 ERA.

Most recently, Kent State lost 4-2 in a National Invitational Softball Championship (NISC) Lynchburg Regional elimination game in 2019.
The Flashes defeated host Campbell in the only previous meeting, 2-0, on Feb. 16, 2007, in Greensboro. Kent State went 3-0 against Howard during the 2020 season, outscoring the Bison by a combined scored of 23-4.
