KENT, Ohio — Kent State fell to visiting Buffalo Saturday afternoon at the M.A.C. Center, 82-64.
The Golden Flashes (17-10, 9-9 MAC) struggled to knock down shots, finishing the contest by going 20-of-68 (29.4%) from the floor. Junior Katie Shumate scored a team-high 18 points. Senior Lindsey Thall just missed a double-double and totaled 11 points and nine rebounds.
The Bulls scored off the opening tip and built a 9-4 lead. A pair of baskets by Shumate and three-pointer by senior Hannah Young got Kent State within 11-9. Buffalo scored eight of the next 10 points before Shumate was fouled on a jump shot and added a free throw to make it 19-14 at the end of the first period.
After trading baskets to begin the second, Buffalo distanced itself with a 15-3 run. The Bulls led by 20 at halftime.
An 8-0 run cut Kent State's deficit to 11 and forced the Bulls to take timeout with 5:57 remaining in the third quarter. Thall made two free throws with 55.7 seconds left to get within 57-44. Momentum seemed to be with the Flashes following a steal by junior Clare Kelly on UB's next possession, but a missed three-point attempt that would have made it a 10-point game was followed by a buzzer-beating triple by the Bulls' Dyaisha Fair to make it 60-44.
Kent State will begin the final week of the regular season with a trip to Bowling Green on Wednesday, March 2.
