LUBBOCK, TX- A late Texas Tech rally gave the Red Raiders a sweep of the double header on Sunday afternoon at Rip Griffin Stadium.
GAME ONE
The Red Raiders took game one on Sunday and grabbed an early lead with a lead-off home run in the bottom of the first inning. The Flashes got lead-off man Kyle Jackson to third base in both the first and third innings but could not get him home. The Red Raiders extended the lead in the third, getting a pair of doubles in a three-run inning.
Michael McNamara got the Flashes' offense going in the fourth, lining a single to right center and taking advantage of an error to advance to third. Mack Timbrook wasted little time bringing him home, doubling to right to plate the Flashes' first run of the game. That would be it for the Kent State offense in the opener with the Tech bullpen throwing four innings of shutout relief. Freshmen Eric Chalus and Caden Leonard had solid collegiate debuts, combining for three strikeouts in relief of Collin Romel.
GAME TWO
The nightcap was a back-and-forth affair. Texas Tech struck early getting a two-run homer in the first and a solo shot in the third to take a 3-0 lead. The Flashes rallied back in the fourth, hanging a crooked four-spot up in the inning. Justin Miknis started the inning with a walk and after a McNamara single, Timbrook brough Miknis home with a single of his own. Nick Elsen was hit by a pitch and Sam Thompson tied the game with a two-run single. Collin Mathews gave the Flashes a lead with a groundout and Kent State took a 4-3 lead into the fifth.
Aidan Longwell gave Kent State a 5-3 lead, going to the opposite field and lining one over the left field wall. The Flashes thought they had a 6-3 lead an inning later. Mack Timbrook walked and proceeded to steal second and third. With two out, Mathews laid down a drag bunt but was ruled out after a Texas Tech challenge. It proved pivotal as the Red Raiders had the final rally on Sunday night. Tech scored four in the seventh with the big blow being a three-run homer that hit off the top of the wall and kicked over the fence. The Flashes would get the tying run to the plate in the ninth but could not draw even.
The Flashes wrap up the road portion of their non-conference weekends with a trip to Clarksville, Tennessee to match up with the Austin Peay Governors. First pitch on Friday is set for 4 p.m. Eastern.
