NEW ORLEANS – Kent State's Jake Wickey has been named Great Lakes Region Men's Field Athlete of the Year for the second indoor season in a row, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced on Thursday.
Wickey's runner-up finish at the NCAA Championships was the best by a Golden Flash in the weight throw since Jacques Accambray won his second national title in 1974. The fifth-year thrower earned Mid-American Conference Most Outstanding Field Performer honors after winning his record fourth weight throw title at the conference meet last month. Wickey broke the Kent State record with a personal-best throw of 23.15m (75'-11.75") on Feb. 19, which put him at No. 4 in the national rankings. He nearly posted an undefeated season and beat 95 of 96 competitors over six meets.
The Medina native and his Flashes teammates are scheduled to begin the outdoor season at the Raleigh Relays from Thursday, March 24 through Saturday, March 26.
