CLARKSVILLE, TN- The Golden Flashes swept the Austin Peay Governors, taking a Saturday doubleheader 8-4 and 16-9.
Collin Mathews led the charge on Saturday, going 5-6 between the two games, with a homer and five driven in as well as four stolen bases.
GAME ONE | Kent State 8 Austin Peay 4
Kent State got on the board early on Saturday, scoring twice in the first inning. Aidan Longwell and Mathews each had run-scoring singles to put Kent State up early. The Governors tied it up in the second only to have the Flashes answer back in the third. Again it was Mathews delivering, driving home his second run of the game and capping the Flashes' second two-run inning of the game.
Michael McNamara cracked a solo homer in the fourth and Kent State broke the game open with a three-run fifth. Again Mathews was in the middle of it, singling to push Justin Miknis to second. After a wild pitch, Miknis scored on a ground out and Mathews came home two pitches later on a passed ball. Sam Thompson plated the third run, scoring McNamara with a single to left.
Collin Romel got the win, going five and a third allowing four runs, three earned and striking out five. Ben Cruikshank struck out five as well in his three and a third innings of relief and Grant Vera fanned his only batter in getting the save.
GAME TWO | Kent State 16 Austin Peay 9
The Flashes scored in each of the last eight innings and pounded out 22 hits in the night cap. Kent State blasted four homers including the second of the day for McNamara, a three-run shots from Justin Kirby, a two-run shot from Mathews as well as the first collegiate homer for Kyle Jackson.
Connor Ashby came off the bench to go four-for-four and Aidan Longwell was a home run shy of the cycle. Eight different Flashes had multi-hit games
The bullpen allowed just one run over the final four innings, allowing the offense to put the game out of reach. Evan Wolf was credited with the victory, going an inning and two-thirds allowing just one hit for his second scoreless outing of the series and third on the season.
The sweep puts Kent State at 4-5 on the year as they enter MAC play next weekend. Kent State will welcome in the defending MAC Champion Central Michigan Chippewas to Schoonover Stadium for a four-game series.
