HOLLAND, OH.... For the 23rd consecutive season, the MAC Women's Golf Trophy will be headed to northeast Ohio as the Golden Flashes kept their unbeaten streak alive, wrapping up the MAC Championship with an 18 stroke lead on their next closest contender in Northern Illinois.
While the Huskies' Jasmine Ly would claim an individual title, the Flashes packed the top of the leaderboard, occupying four of the top eight spots with the whole team finishing inside the top-third of the field.
Fifth-year Chloe Salort finished strong with a 74 in the final round on Sunday to jump senior Emily Price for the runner-up spot in this year's championship. Price played solid and steady throughout and joined Salort on the podium, carding a 220 on the weekend to lock up the third spot.
"Our seniors are great players and they're going to be at the top with their A, B or C game," Flashes head coach Casey VanDamme said. "Having that solid leadership and consistency is really nice and they came through for us again"
Jennifer Gu saved her best for last finishing ahead of all other freshmen at this year's championship, with scores of 76-76-75 keeping her inside the top five of the final standings.
"Jennifer played awesome through some tough course conditions," VanDamme said. "She left some shots out there but she birdied in three of her last six holes. I'm very happy for her and a nod to the all-tournament team is a huge deal."
After a slow start out of the gate, Mayka Hoogeboom stormed back to card a 73 on Saturday and a 74 on Sunday, flying up the field to finish in eighth place.
"I'm proud of Myka," he said. "She's struggled this semester and she started poorly but she fought her way back and had some big success in the last few days."
Noramol Nuchsila rounded out the lineup for Kent State with an impressive top-20 finish to keep the whole team inside the top third of the 60-player field.
Chloe Salort, Emily Price and Jennifer Gu were all named to the 2022 All-Tournament team, making the Flashes the only school with three athletes represented.
"23 in a row is in unbelievable feat in a team sport with team scores," VanDamme said. "So many things can go wrong so we're very happy that we carried on that tradition. Each one feels great no matter how long you do it."
Price will have a solid case for MAC Women's Golfer of the Year while Gu will toss her hat in the ring for MAC Freshman of the Year.
The Flashes will now set their sights on the NCAA Regionals on May 9-11, with more information about sites, times and competitors to be released in the coming weeks.
