KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Jacob Mally and Alexander Shields both scored more than 3,000 points Friday at the Tennessee Relays to complete two-day decathlon totals that put them in the top-10 in Kent State track and field history.
Mally finished with 6,953 points to take sole possession of the No. 7 spot in the Golden Flashes record book, which he previously shared with Mike Cvelbar (6,911). Competing in just his second decathlon due to an injury at this meet a year ago, Shields claimed the No. 10 spot in school history with 6,780 points.
After a slow start that saw him end Thursday's competition in 15th place, Mally made the biggest jump in the 23-athlete field, scoring a Day 2 personal-best 3,404 points and finishing seventh. The Cuyahoga Falls native recorded top-seven finishes in four of the five events. Mally had a big personal-best throw of 125'-10" to take fourth in the discus and was also fourth in the 1500-meter run with a time of 4:41.62. He finished seventh in the 110-meter hurdles (14.61) and pole vault (14'-3.25").
Shields moved into fifth after strong performances in Friday's first two events before finishing in 9th. He ran 14.51 for fourth in the 110m hurdles and followed with a personal-best throw of 113'-7" in the discus. Shields closed the day with another personal-best, completing the 1500m run in 5:04.54.
Kent State has 40 student-athletes scheduled for competition at the Joe May Invitational in Baton Rouge on Saturday. The meet will begin at 10:30 a.m. ET with the women's discus throw.
