BUFFALO, N.Y. – Sophomore Jessica LeBeau took a no-hitter into extra innings of the Kent State softball team's opening game Tuesday afternoon, but host Buffalo came away with victories in both games, 3-0 in eight innings and 2-0.
The Golden Flashes (18-27, 9-16 MAC) totaled more hits than the Bulls, 9-6, but none of them went for more than a single base. Buffalo hit home runs in the eighth inning of the first game and first inning of the second to account for four of its five runs on the day.
Fifth-year Brenna Brownfield led Kent State at the plate, going 3-for-5.
Game 1: Buffalo 3, Kent State 0 (8 innings)
After allowing one base runner in each of the first three innings, Jessica LeBeau retired nine straight batters.
Kent State had multiple runners aboard in the top of the fourth after Emily Lippe was hit by a pitch to start the frame and Brenna Brownfield added her second single of the game two batters later. A groundout to first base placed both runners into scoring position, but LeBeau was unable to beat out the throw after placing a bunt back towards the pitcher.
The Golden Flashes' leadoff hitter reached in both the sixth and eighth but was unable to score.
A swinging bunt broke up LeBeau's no-hit bid to start the bottom of the eighth. Following a sac bunt and strikeout, the next Bull was hit by a pitch. The next batter launched a home run to left field for the walk-off victory.
LeBeau (5-13) finished with 12 strikeouts over 7.2 innings.
Game 2: Buffalo 2, Kent State 0
Anna Aguon's leadoff home run gave the Bulls an early 1-0 lead. Aguon scored again in the third, singling to center, advancing on a hit by pitch and crossing the plate on a single to left field.
Julia Mazanec attempted to start a rally in the fifth, collecting her second hit of the game with one out in the frame. Madison Hershberger then drew a walk to bring the go-ahead run to the plate, but a pair of pinch hitters were unable to deliver a timely hit.
Kent State had two runners aboard again in the sixth after Chloe Cruz and Brenna Brownfield collected two-out singles, but a line drive to left field ended the scoring threat.
Savannah Wing reached on a walk in the seventh, but Buffalo converted a chopper back to the pitcher into a double play to end the game.
Andrea Scali (7-10) recorded eight strikeouts and allowed two runs on four hits over six innings in the circle.
