NORMAN, OK- The Golden Flashes held a 3-0 lead late into the first half on Saturday night but a second-half rally by the seventh-ranked Sooners proved to be the difference in a 33-3 setback on Saturday night in Norman.
It was a defensive struggle in the first half with the Flashes punting on each of their first three possessions and the Sooners punting on their first four. Khalib Johns had a strong first half, putting a pair of Sooner drives to rest with a sack of quarterback Dillon Gabriel.
Kent State got on the board first on a 37-yard Andrew Glass field goal in the second quarter. The Flashes wrapped up a 15-play, 72-yard drive with Glass' boot and converted a pair of third downs on the drive. Collin Schlee scrambled for eight yards on a third-and-seven at the Kent State 11-yard line and later hit Marquez Cooper on a 22-yard pass along the sideline to convert a third-and-13. Oklahoma would get on the board late in the first half on a 36-yard Marvin Mims touchdown catch, the Sooners would lead 7-3 at the half.
The Sooners would pull away in the second half as they scored on the opening possession of the second half and added a field goal to make it 17-3 after getting a short field off a Kent State fumble. The Sooner would add a pair of late third quarter touchdowns and the Flashes had an eight-play, 57-yard stall on downs in the Oklahoma red zone.
Collin Schlee threw for 131 yards on Saturday night and tied with Cooper for the team lead in rushing with 55 yards. Dante Cephas led the receivers with four grabs for 50 yards. Nico Bolden tied a Flashes' career high with a team-best 12 tackles. Khalib Johns totaled six tackles including those two sacks and D.J. Miller led the secondary with a pair of pass break-ups. Josh Smith boomed six punts for an average of 43 yards a kick with a long of 49 and two inside the 20.
The Flashes will open the 2022 home season next weekend, as the Long Island University Sharks come to Dix Stadium. The Golden Flashes have won their last nine home games and are one of a dozen programs with a home win streak of nine games or more heading into the 2022 season. Kick-off is set for noon and will be parents and family weekend. Single game, mini-plan and season tickets are on sale now at KSUTix.com.
