Kent State Takes Down Cleveland State, 3-0

KENT, Ohio โ The Kent State volleyball team made quick work of visiting Cleveland State, winning 3-0 (25-23, 25-15, 25-21) on Thursday to start the final week of non-conference action.
The Golden Flashes (8-2) earned their fifth victory in a row with a strong defensive performance, limiting the Vikings to a .093 hitting percentage.
Freshman Mia Soerensen and senior Savannah Matthews had 12 kills each to lead the attack, while graduate student Alex Haffner logged her fourth double-double of the season with 33 assists and 11 digs. Graduate student Erin Gardner led the defense with 13 digs.
How it Happenedโฆ
ย ย ย Set 1: Kent State trailed by four before going on an 8-0 run that included four kills by Mia Soerensen. Cleveland State took the next five points to go ahead 15-14. The Golden Flashes surged back ahead by as many as three points but had to take timeout with the score tied 23-23. A big swing by Soerensen led to a bad set on the ensuing point for a sideout, and the Vikings hit the antenna on the next point.
ย ย ย Set 2: After a slow start, the Flashes closed on a 24-10 run. Savannah Matthews and Soerensen totaled five kills each.
ย ย ย Set 3: The teams split the first 30 points before Kent State took control with a six-point service run by Matthews. After the lead was trimmed to 22-20, Taylor Heberle provided some powerful swings off the bench and closed it out with kills on two of the Flashes' last three points.
Up Next for the Flashes
Kent State travels to Youngstown State for the non-league finale Friday night. The contest will be streamed on ESPN+ at 6 p.m.
