Flashes Drop Season Opener At Washington

SEATTLE- The Golden Flashes dropped the opener of the 2022 season on Saturday night, falling 45-20 to the Washington Huskies at Husky Stadium.
Collin Schlee threw for 178 yards and a score and ran for 51 more yards in his first collegiate start. The Maryland native connected with Devontez Walker on a 47-yard touchdown strike in the first quarter to get Kent State on the board. Schlee's favorite target on the night was Dante Cephas. The all-conference wideout in 2021 picked up where he left off last season, grabbing six passes for 106 yards on Saturday night.
The Flashes out rushed the Huskies 147-132 with the Flashes spreading the wealth between four ball carriers. Marquez Cooper busted into the endzone from two yards out on a direct snap out of the wildcat. Freshman Gavin Garcia had 30 yards rushing and a 52-yard kick return in his college debut.
Washington's Michael Penix junior was tremendous in his Husky debut, tossing for 375 yards and four touchdowns on Saturday night and proved too much for the Golden Flashes. Kent State did get a trio of forced fumbles by the defense and special teams on Saturday night and JoJo Evans popped one of those balls loose and led the defense with seven stops.
Kent State remains on the road next weekend, heading to Norman for a matchup with the #9 Oklahoma Sooners. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m. ET/6 p.m. CT and will air on ESPN+ and the Kent State Radio Network.
