INDIANAPOLIS — Kent State women's track and field student-athlete Tianna McCormick recently represented the Mid-American Conference at the NCAA Division I Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) fall meetings, which were conducted at the NCAA headquarters on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1.
McCormick provided the conferences with a voice in conversations about current NCAA topics, including name, image and likeness (NIL), undergraduate transfer policies and mental health education, over the two days.
"We had a lot of good discussion on several topics," McCormick said. "There are a lot of big issues that may seem so easily fixable that truly are not. It's so important for all 32 conferences to have a voice in the room since the needs of each conference can be very different."
Vice president of Kent State SAAC, McCormick is in her second year representing the Golden Flashes at the MAC level and serves on the executive committee of the Council of Student-Athletes (CoSA) for the conference.
"Tianna is a remarkable student-athlete leader who not only excels in her sport but also uplifts everyone around her with her unwavering support, making her a true role model for her teammates and peers," Assistant Athletics Director for Student-Athlete Development and Alumni Engagement Katie Schilling said. "Her strong personality has helped lead our Student-Athlete Advisory Committee."
McCormick is grateful for all of the experiences Kent State has provided that have her boldly prepared for life after sport.
"My advice for younger student-athletes is how important it is to get involved and develop relationships with people in the athletics department," McCormick said. "I was so certain I wanted to be a coach, but my experiences have opened my eyes to all of the other opportunities there are to work in college athletics. I've also been able to connect with people from other schools and conferences to set myself up for post-graduation."
