KENT-Chrishon McCray caught two touchdown passes, including a 42-yard strike in the first half but it was not enough as the Ohio Bobcats defeated the Golden Flashes 42-17 at Peden Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
McCray got loose down the far sideline in the second quarter and Michael Alaimo hit him in stride for the walk-in touchdown to tie the game at seven. The sophomore finished the day with a team-best six grabs for 92 yards and two scores.
The teams traded punts in a scoreless first quarter. Both the Flashes and Bobcats were able to string together a short drive, only to see the defense force a punt. Shortly into the second quarter, the Bobcats struck first, only to see the Flashes bounce back on McCray's first touchdown of the day. It would stay tied at seven until the final stages of the first half as the Bobcats scored twice in the final four minutes to lead 21-7 heading into the half.
Kent State took advantage of some Ohio penalties and drove down the field on the opening possession of the second half. Andrew Glass connected on a 37-yard field goal, marking the first time Ohio had allowed points in the third quarter this season.
Tommy Ulatowski came into the game in the third quarter and led the Flashes on a scoring drive. The sophomore scampered on a 39-yard run and finished with 60 yards on four carries. He hit McCray on a roll out in the back corner of the endzone for a 10-yard touchdown on fourth down. The Flashes defense closed the day with a four-down goal line stand, turning the Bobcats away on four tries inside the five. DJ Miller and Devin Nicholson led the defense with seven stops, Nicholson added a tackle for loss on Saturday.
The Flashes fall to 1-5 on the season and 0-2 in MAC play. Ohio is now 5-1 and 2-0 in conference. Kent State stays on the road next weekend, heading to Ypsilanti to face Eastern Michigan. Kick-off is set for noon and airs on CBS Sports Network and the Kent State Radio Network.
