Heartbreak in Wagon Wheel Rivalry Game

AKRON- A rivalry game full of momentum swings swung the wrong way on Wednesday night in a 31-27 setback to the Zips.
Tommy Ulatowski threw for 229 yards and three touchdowns and ran for a fourth on Wednesday, helping lead the offense. The sophomore quarterback added 36 yards on the ground, one of four backs to gain over 30 yards on the night in a balanced rushing effort.
Two of those touchdowns went to Chrishon McCray, who had a career high 161 yards on six grabs and those two scores. However, the standout wide receiver didn't return to the game after making his sixth grab of the contest. Kent State didn't score after that, and the Zips rallied and scored the game's final 21 points.
Stephen Daley led the defense with eight stops, including two stops behind the line of scrimmage and a sack. D.J. Miller and Bryce Sheppert added seven stops for a defense that lost one of its senior leaders, Devin Nicholson in the first half.ย
The loss snaps the Flashes' streak of four-straight Wagon Wheel victories and drop to 1-8 on the season and 0-5 in MAC play. The Zips improve to 2-7 overall on the year and 1-4 in conference. The Flashes are back in action at home next Wednesday, welcoming in Bowling Green for the Battle of the Anniversary Award. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m. and will air on CBS Sports Network and the Kent State Radio Network.
