PITTSBURGH — Sophomore Corynne Hauser recorded her first double-double in Kent State uniform with 19 points and career-high 11 rebounds on Sunday in an 89-82 double-overtime setback to Duquesne.
Hauser added seven assists, one shy of a career-high, in 42 minutes of action. Junior Jenna Batsch also scored 19 points for a new career-high.
After tying it with a 7-1 run to finish the third quarter, the Golden Flashes (4-4) scored seven points in the first 90 seconds of the fourth to force the Dukes to call timeout. After forcing turnovers on consecutive defensive possessions, Hauser scored to make it 59-50 and match the largest lead of the game. A basket by Batsch extended it back to a nine-point game with 4:29 to play but the hosts were able to tie it entering the final minute of the period.
Hauser put the Flashes back ahead via a trip to the charity stripe and graduate student Mikala Morris added a paint bucket to make it 66-63 with 35.7 on the clock. Duquesne tied it on a three-pointer with 11.3 to play and both teams had go-ahead shots blocked as the game went to overtime.
Kent State took its first lead of the extra period on a three-pointer by redshirt senior Katie Shumate with 31.9 seconds left, but the Dukes answered with a triple to go back ahead with 3.1 seconds left. Shumate sank two foul shots with 1.4 on the clock to tie it again and send the game to a second overtime.
Hauser gave the Flashes a 76-75 lead on her first three-pointer of the day with 3:35 to play but turnovers on three of the next four possessions helped Duquesne score nine in a row and take its largest lead of the game, 84-76, with 1:03 left. Kent State scored three points on both of its next two possessions to get within four but was unable to get stops and had to send its host to the free throw line.
The Flashes will close the non-conference schedule with home games against Lake Erie on Dec. 19 and La Roche on Dec. 30.
