CLEVELAND- Jake Ferri earned his 100th career victory and Pablo Castro earned his first varsity win but the host Cleveland State Vikings rallied for a 18-16 dual victory on Thursday night.
Jake Ferri dominated Ben Aranda from the jump, earning win 100 in convincing fashion. Aranda had come into the match with 15 wins on the season but that didn't matter to Ferri as he earned his third bonus point win in conference and 14th win overall.
Louis Newell dropped down to 133 after wrestling the last two seasons at 141. Newell wrestled well at the new weight but it was Manley that eked out a 4-3 decision. Pablo Castro earned his first varsity win with a 2-1 defensive bout with Cody Moosman. Castro landed the lone takedown in the match, with riding time not factoring into the outcome. Kody Komara earned a similar style victory in a 3-2 win over Douglas Terry. Komara had the lone takedown in the match with the remaining points coming via the escape.
The match of the night went to Marcus Robinson and Keegan Knapp. The freshman battled the national qualifier for seven minutes, landing a pair of takedowns in an incredible back-and-forth match. Knapp landed a takedown late to tie the match at 7 after Robinson's escape but the Vikings' veteran landed the final takedown with seconds remaining to earn the win.
The Flashes' final win came via injury as JR Reed of Cleveland State had to withdraw only 14 seconds into the 174 match. The trio of Tyler Bates, Blake Schaffer and Jacob Cover all wrestled hard but came up on the wrong end of all three close decisions.
Kent State will wrap the regular season on Sunday when they host the Bloomsburg Huskies for the first time. It is also senior day for the Flashes as they will honor the 2023 graduating class. The pre-match festivities will start about 15 minutes prior to the noon start.
