
Kent State Falls to Syracuse in WNIT First Round

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The Kent State women's basketball team's season came to an end on Wednesday with an 84-56 loss at Syracuse in a 2023 WNIT first round game.
Senior Katie Shumate recorded a double-double for the third consecutive game and had team-highs of 18 points and 11 rebounds. Junior Casey Santoro knocked down three shots from beyond the three-point arc and finished with 13 points.
The Golden Flashes (21-11) led most of the contest's opening 16 minutes, but a 15-3 run to end the second period gave the host Orange a nine-point lead at halftime. Kent State committed five turnovers during the stretch, while Syracuse made seven of eight shots from the field.
Shumate scored on the first possession in the third period, but the Orange made five of their first seven field goal attempts to push the lead to15 at the media timeout. The teams traded baskets over the next three minutes before Syracuse sank three free throws in the final minute to lead 62-44 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Orange used a 15-2 run in the fourth quarter to pull away.
Kent State finishes the season with 21 wins, the most since 2005-06.
