
Six Flashes Victorious at Oliver Nikoloff Invitational

CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Kent State track and field team had six student-athletes win events during competition at the Oliver Nikoloff Invitational on March 31 and April 1.
Making his Golden Flashes debut, freshman Aaron Schmook earned the first victory on Friday in the men's javelin throw. Schmook opened with a personal-best throw of 198'-3", which was more than 20 feet further than any other thrower in the field.
Aliesha Shaw added a win in the women's discus with a throw of 163'-4".
The men's team captured three wins on the track. Kyle Sommer ran a personal-best 21.80 seconds in the 200-meter dash, Quintin Cooks won the 800-meter run in 1:54.14 and Shadrack Kipkosgei finished his first collegiate 10,000-meter run in 30:51.76. Alexandria Verbancic won the women's 400-meter hurdles in 1:06.10.
Nolan Landis posted a pair of top-five finishes, taking second in the men's discus throw (172'-1") and fifth in the men's shot put (52'-9.5").
Sydney Gallagher ran a personal-best time of 11:31.94 to place second in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase. Lillie Franks opened the outdoor season with a runner-up finish in the women's high, clearing the bar at 5'-5.25".
Korie Davis II and Dontae Deas finished second and third, respectively, in the men's 400-meter hurdles. Davis II crossed the finish line in 55.83 seconds and Deas was close behind in 56.83 seconds.
Kent State placed third and fourth in the men's 400-meter run with Logan Doyle clocking 50.11 seconds and Jonathan Solomon crossing in 50.13 seconds.
Two freshmen performed well in the horizontal jumps. Amare Hall took for third in the men's long jump (22'-8.5") and fourth in the men's triple jump (43'-2.5"), while Keeli Dunaway placed fourth in the women's triple jump (38'-2") and sixth in the women's long jump (17'-10.25").
The Flashes had two fourth-place performers in throwing events. Meghan Daly recorded a throw of 45'-9.75" in the women's shot put and Grace Luther had a top heave of 167'-9" in the women's hammer throw.
Alexandre Malanda rounded out Kent State's top-five finishers with a mark of 22'-2.5" in the men's long jump.
The Flashes will return to action next weekend at the Duke Invitational from April 6-8.
