KENT, Ohio – Junior Emily Lippe launched her 20th home run in a Kent State uniform, but visiting Toledo rallied for a 7-5 victory in the first game of a scheduled doubleheader at Devine Diamond on Saturday. Due to a pair of lightning delays and extended rainfall, the second game was canceled after just two innings were completed. The game will not be resumed, and none of the stats will count.
The Golden Flashes (10-27, 5-10 MAC) got on the board first with two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Sophomore Savannah Wing started the frame with a single and then moved to third on a sac bunt and passed ball. Junior Jade Ramer drew a walk to put two aboard. A ball batted by senior Julia Mazanec was misplayed by the Rockets third baseman, allowing Wing to score. Freshman Bri Despines followed with a single up the middle to score Ramer.
Lippe extended the lead to 3-0 with a solo shot in the third. She is the ninth player in Kent State history with 20 career homers.
Toledo scored twice in each of the next three innings to take a 6-3 lead.
A sac fly by Despines and RBI single by redshirt senior Alexandria Whitmore made it a 6-5 game and forced the Rockets to make a change in the pitching circle. The reliever's first four pitches missed the strike zone to load the bases, but a foul out near the fence on the third base line ended the rally.
A lightning delay of nearly an hour began during the first at-bat in the top of the seventh. After play resumed, the Rockets came through with a single and double to make it 7-5.
Freshman Bekah Zachrich started the bottom of the seventh with a single through the right side, but the Flashes were unable to plate any runs.
Redshirt senior Anilese Kelly (4-12) started in the circle and recorded two strikeouts while allowing four runs on six hits over 4.2 innings. Freshman Macy Irelan tossed the final 2.1 innings and allowed three runs on six hits.
Kent State is scheduled to travel to Western Michigan for a three-game series on April 21-22.
