KENT- The Flashes rapped out 18 hits and held off a furious Tiffin rally in a 15-12 victory at Schoonover Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
The Dragons scored three in the eighth and five more in the ninth before Mitchell Scott came in and slammed the door for his ninth save of the season.
Mike McNamara led the offensive charge with the second two-homer day for the Flashes this season. The shortstop hit his first off the top of the wall and over for a solo blast in the third and added a no-doubt, two run homer in the sixth. All told, McNamara went 3-for-3 with two homers and three driven in on Wednesday. The middle of the Kent State lineup did damage against the Dragons with Justin Miknis also homering and added two doubles as part of a 3-for-4 day at the plate with a pair of RBI and three runs scored. Aidan Longwell also enjoyed a three-hit day with three runs scored and two more driven in, giving him a MAC-best 54 this season.
Kent State scored in bunches on Wednesday, scoring three in the first, four in the third, two in the fourth and three in the sixth and led by as many as nine throughout the game. It was a balanced 1-through-9 effort as every starter reached base at least once and seven different players had at least one RBI and eight scored at least one run.
But Tiffin would not go quitely, mounting a rally over the final two innings. Jordan Kolenda quieted the rally in the eighth, retiring all three batters he faced including a pair of strikeouts. Mitchell Scott did the same in the ninth, inheriting the bases loaded and getting a force out and line out to end it. The grad student earned his ninth save of the season, a top three mark in the NCAA in the victory. Ciaran Caughey threw three solid innings of middle relief to earn his first collegiate win.
The Flashes win streak moves to eight games as Kent State improved to 26-10 overall and 15-1 at Schoonover Stadium, while Tiffin falls to 11-26 on the year. Kent State hits the road this weekend with a three-game series at Miami (OH). First pitch on Friday is set for 5 p.m.
