KENT- Kent State used an eight-run third and piled on 17 hits in a 13-4 victory over the Ohio Bobcats on Saturday afternoon.

Collin Mathews led the offensive charge with four hits and four driven in but it was a balanced effort across the board with every starter contributing a hit, run scored or RBI.

It was Ohio that took the early lead on Saturday, using a Joe Whitman throwing error to plate a pair of runs and take the early 2-0 lead. It would be one of the few mistakes the lefty made on Saturday. Whitman threw six innings, allowing four runs (only two earned) and eight hits while striking out five.

The run support came in waves in the third. Kent State sent 12 men to the plate, pounding out six hits to plate the eight runs. The big blow in the inning was a single to left by Josh Johnson, the ball got under left fielder Gideon Antle's glove allowing Johnson to round the bases, three runs scored on the little league homer.

The Flashes poured it on in the fifth. Jake Casey sent a drive off the batter's eye in center field for a two-run homer. Two batters later, Collin Mathews sent a drive over the left-center wall for a two-run blast of his own.

Jack Kartsonas earned the rare baseball feat of the three-inning save, needing to face only 10 batters to get the final nine outs. The victory sends Kent State to 30-12 on the season and 15-5 in MAC play. Ohio drops to 16-22 and is now 13-7 against MAC foes. The Flashes will go for the sweep on Sunday afternoon with a scheduled 1 p.m. first pitch.
