CLEVELAND – Graduate student goalkeeper Sarah Melén has earned Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors, the league office announced Tuesday.
Melén played all 180 minutes in goal over the weekend for the Golden Flashes. Against No. 21 Pitt on Thursday night, Melén tallied a season-high 10 saves, the fourth double-digit save game of her career. The keeper faced 25 shots on the night, only allowing 1 goal as the Flashes hung with the potent Pitt team.
Three days later, Melén earned her first shutout victory on the road at Cleveland State, making three saves as the Flashes won 2-0. Melén led the conference with four shutouts in league play a season ago and now has 14 for her career.
The Frisco, Texas native leads the MAC with 19 saves after two weeks of play, and sits just four stops short of reaching 200 saves for her career. She would be just the sixth Golden Flash to reach the milestone.
Melén and the Flashes will stay on the road for a pair of away games against PAC-12 foes this week, taking on Arizona and Arizona State over the weekend in Tempe.
