CLEVELAND – Kent State volleyball sophomore Mackenzie McGuire has been named Mid-American Conference Female Scholar-Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday afternoon.
The Scholar-Athlete of the Week Award is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during that week's competition. The winners are selected by a representative of the MAC's Faculty Athletics Representatives (FARs).
McGuire averaged 5.11 kills per set to lead the Golden Flashes in a pair of matches to conclude non-conference action last week. The outside hitter from Broken Arrow, Oklahoma delivered eight of her match-high 18 kills to lead Kent State to a thrilling 35-33 set 4 win on Thursday and added two more kills in the fifth set to secure a road victory over Cleveland State. She followed with a career night in the home opener against Youngstown State. McGuire posted a .408 hitting percentage and career-high 28 kills, which is the fourth most in a four-set match by any player in the NCAA this season.
Kent State will open MAC play by hosting Buffalo for two matches at the M.A.C. Center this weekend. Friday's match is scheduled for 6 p.m. with fans receiving Kent State friendship braces as part of the "I'm Feelin' 22" Night theme. In collaboration with the Kent State University Women's Center, Saturday will be the FlaSHEs Will game, which aims to involve girls and women from the surrounding communities. First serve is scheduled for 4 p.m.
