
Kent State Sweeps Manhattan in Saturday Softball Doubleheader

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Kent State pounded out 26 hits, including 13 for extra bases, while beating host Manhattan by scores of 7-0 and 8-1 in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Flashes (13-8) had five players with at least four hits on the day. Graduate student Alexandria Whitmore led the way with five hits and five runs scored. Senior Emily Lippe and junior Savannah Wing had four RBIs each. Lippe also homered twice.
Game 1: Kent State 7, Manhattan 0
Macy Irelan (4-4) had a season-high 11 strikeouts and allowed just three hits in her first shutout of the season.
Doubles by Julia Mazanec and Brynn Libler put the Golden Flashes ahead 1-0 in the top of the second inning.
Alexandria Whitmore hit her first triple of the season in the top of the third and scored on a sac fly by Bri Despines for a 2-0 lead.
Delaney Robeson and Savannah Wing homered in the top of the fifth and Libler added a RBI double to extend the lead to 6-0.
Despines drove in the final run with a double in the sixth inning.
Libler and Carley Penner led the offense with three hits each.
Game 2: Kent State 8, Manhattan 1
Kent State plated a run in the top of the first inning on a double by Julia Mazanec.
After allowing a solo home run in the bottom of the second that tied the game at 1-1, Megan Nuechterlein (9-3) retired the next 12 batters and held the Jaspers hitless. Nuechterlein totaled five strikeouts.
Emily Lippe launched the first of two homers in the top of the third to take a 3-1 lead.
Kent State scored three more in the fifth on a two-run double by Savannah Wing and sac fly by Carley Penner.
Lippe capped the scoring with another two-run blast in the seventh inning.
Wing and Alexandria Whitmore both had three hits in the nightcap.

Kent State will go for the series sweep on Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 11 a.m.
