KALAMAZOO- Mike McNamara drove in a pair, but a pair of big innings, including a four-run sixth was too much to overcome in a 9-3 setback at Western Michigan in the series opener.
McNamara gave the Flashes an early lead with a two-out single in the first, plating Tim Orr who had reached on a two-out double. Two innings later,he brought the Flashes within one with a sac fly. Connor Ashby tied the game in the fifth with his first homer of the season.
Western Michigan had taken the lead in the second, scoring a trio off a single, walk and hit batter with the bases loaded. After the Flashes tied it in the fifth, Western broke it open with a four-run sixth. Back-to-back bases loaded hits, including a two-run double all but put the game out of reach for the Flashes. Kent State would put two on in the seventh, but couldn't score and the Broncos added two more insurance runs in the bottom of the inning.
The loss drops Kent State to 11-13 overall and 4-3 in MAC play while Western Michigan improves to 11-12 overall and also sits at 4-3 in conference. The two school will face-off again on Friday with a first pitch scheduled for 3:05 p.m.
