KALAMAZOO-The Flashes rallied for two in the ninth and Peyton Cariaco closed the door on the Broncos in a 5-4 comeback win on Saturday afternoon.
Trailing 4-3 in the ninth, Ripken Reese hit a 1-1 pitch over the right field wall for a game-tying solo shot and a perfect time for his first collegiate homer. A pair of hit batters put the go-ahead run in scoring position and Tim Orr delivered a go-ahead double on the first pitch he saw. Cariaco made the lead hold up, striking out two in the ninth and stranding the tying run on second.
Orr also delivered a game-tying double in the sixth, plating Bo Shinkle and tying the game at two. Western surged ahead with two in the seventh only to see the Flashes get one back in the eighth on a double steal and going ahead for good in the ninth.
Calvin Bickerstaff got the start and tossed six strong innings, scattering six hits and allowing two earned while striking out four. Benny Roebuck and Cariaco combined for the final nine outs of the game to help move Kent State to 12-14 overall and 5-4 in MAC play. The Flashes head home for a busy five-game week, starting on Tuesday night against Ohio State. First pitch from Schoonover is set for 6 p.m.
