ANN ARBOR, MI- A pair of late-inning homers were too much to overcome on Tuesday as Kent State fell to Michigan 6-4 in 11 innings on Tuesday in Ann Arbor.
A back-and-forth pitcher's duel picked up tempo late as both teams got clutch plays in the late stages on Tuesday night. Hunter Klotz scored in the eighth inning on a wild pitch after he had worked his way around the diamond, giving the Flashes a 3-2 lead. In the bottom of the inning Peyton Cariaco inherited a pair of runners in scoring position and one out, the lefty left them there after a strike out and ground out ended the threat.
In the ninth, Josh Johnson singled and came in to score off a Tim Orr double, his second rbi hit of the game, to make it 4-2 Flashes. In the bottom of the ninth, a pinch-hit, two-out, two-run homer from Mitch Voit tied the game at four and treated the fans to free baseball. The Flashes would load the bases in the 10th, but a Johnson line out ended the inning. The Wolverines would win it in the 11th on a walk-off two run homer.
Orr and Klotz paced the offense with a pair of hits while the Flashes joined the Wolverines in using a bevy of arms. Kent State threw seven pitchers to Michigan's nine with Benny Roebuck and Gavin Jones each working multiple innings of shutout ball. The loss drops Kent State to 22-21 on the year while Michigan improves to 24-21. The Flashes head back home to open a key three-game series against Miami on Friday. The series opener will be the KENTucky Derby with an elevated game experience in the third base tent, tickets can be purchased in advance or on the day of the game. First pitch is at 6 p.m.
