Golden Flashes Fall to Indiana in Season Opener

KENT, Ohio – The Kent State field hockey team opened their season on Friday with a 3-1 defeat to the Indiana Hoosiers.
Indiana broke the deadlock in what was a hotly contested first half with the game's opening goal midway through the second quarter. Despite not registering a shot in the first half, a strong defensive performance, including one save from starting goalkeeper Alli Wood, kept the Flashes in the game heading into the second half.
After giving up a second goal midway through the third quarter, Kent State opened their goalscoring tally for the season through a wonderfully worked penalty corner play to cut the deficit in half. After receiving the corner at the top of the circle, sophomore midfielder Eva Usoz found Bella Carpenter with an incisive pass, and the senior made no mistake finding the back of the cage.
The Flashes could not hold the momentum for long as Indiana re-established a two goal lead with just two minutes remaining in the third quarter. Despite four shot attempts in the fourth quarter, Kent State was unable to find the back of the cage again as the Hoosiers protected their 3-1 lead to the final horn. Freshman goalkeeper Lieve Jensen, who came on in the second half for the Flashes, marked her collegiate debut with four saves in just one half of play.
Up next, the Flashes host no. 11 Liberty at Murphy-Mellis Field on Sunday, Sept. 1 at 1 p.m.
