KENT, Ohio – The Kent State field hockey team concluded the opening weekend of the regular season with a 4-1 defeat to the no. 11 Liberty Lady Flames.
Liberty opened the scoring 12 minutes into the contest by converting a penalty corner. Heading into the second quarter, the Flashes were able to draw level through a clinical finish by Agustina Florio, her first goal of the season. Emma Rolston and Eva Usoz provided assists on the penalty corner play, improving Usoz's assist total to two through two games.
After the Flashes drew level, the Lady Flames showed why they were selected to finish first in the Big East preseason coaches' poll. Liberty responded to the Flashes' leveler by converting two more penalty corners into goals, taking a 3-1 lead into the half. The Lady Flames proved to be too much as the second half commenced, adding another goal to leave Murphy-Mellis Field with a 4-1 victory.
Similar to Friday's game, Kent State goalkeepers Alli Wood and Lieve Jensen each spent one half in the cage for the Flashes. On a day when they were both tested, Wood finished with four saves while Jensen recorded three saves in her second game of collegiate action.
Up next, the Golden Flashes will take part in a three-game road trip to California, beginning with a matchup at Stanford slated for Thursday, Sept. 5 at 3 p.m.
