STANFORD, Calif. โ The Kent State field hockey team opened their three-game road stand on Thursday with a 3-1 defeat to Stanford.
The Cardinal came out of the gates firing, recording three shots and the game's opening goal within the first 90 seconds of the contest. Following the early Stanford flurry of attack, the Flashes were able to build momentum, outshooting the Cardinal 2-0 over the remainder of the first quarter. Kent State was unable to convert on the momentum as Stanford doubled their lead midway through the second quarter, seeing out the two-goal lead until halftime.
Despite the halftime deficit, the shot count between the two teams was even at six. After an uneventful third quarter which saw only one shot registered between both teams, Stanford added to their lead with the Cardinal's third goal of the game five minutes into the fourth quarter.ย
The Flashes responded almost instantly with a goal of their own. After recording two assists this past weekend, reigning MAC freshman of the year Eva Usoz opened her goalscoring account for the season with a stellar solo goal. The sophomore won the ball from a Stanford defender near midfield before carrying the ball into the circle and finding the bottom right corner of the cage with a precise finish.
Despite being awarded a penalty kick and recording another shot on goal before the end of the match, the Flashes were unable to mount a comeback, ultimately falling 3-1.
The Flashes will continue to search for their first win of the season as they take on the California Golden Bears in game two of a three-game road stand on Friday at 7 p.m. EST.
