
Salinas Leads Kent State in Loss to Cincinnati

CINCINNATI – The Kent State volleyball team lost to Cincinnati, 3-0 (22-25, 19-25, 14-25), Saturday afternoon at Fifth Third Arena.
The Golden Flashes (1-7) struggled to slow the Bearcats' attack, as the host finished the match with a .416 hitting percentage.
Redshirt senior Karina Salinas was Kent State's top performer on offense and defense. Salinas posted eight kills to go with nine digs and two aces.
Junior Kendall White totaled 26 assists. Senior Tylee Fuller recorded nine digs to share the team lead.
How it Happened…
   Set 1 (22-25): Kent State took its first lead of the contest, 3-2, following a kill by Avrey Rigney and Cincinnati attack error. The Bearcats used a 4-0 run to go back ahead, but the Golden Flashes answered to win the next three and tie it at 18-18. Cincinnati took the next two points to go ahead for good. Kent State got within one point three times, but the host delivered on kill on the ensuing point each time.
   Set 2 (19-25): A kill by Hailey Brenner brought the Flashes within 8-7, but the Bearcats captured the next four points as part of a larger 9-2 run to pull away.
   Set 3 (14-25): Mackenzie McGuire's third kill of the set evened it at 4-4 before Cincinnati went on an 8-0 run that was bookended by a pair of aces. McGuire ended the set with five kills on seven attacks, but the Bearcats hit at a .560 clip to close out the sweep.

Kent State will host Cleveland State for the home opener at the M.A.C. Center at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 19.
