FOOTS BAY, Ont. – The Kent State men's golf team wrapped up their second tournament of the 2024-2025 season on Tuesday with round three of the Canadian Collegiate at Öviinbyrd Golf Course. The Flashes fired a 5-under-par 283 to finish the tournament 11 strokes under par and in fourth place among the field of 10 teams.
After a strong start in the opening two rounds yesterday, Isaiah Ibit picked up where he left off by firing a 4-under-par 68 in round three. Competing on home soil in just his second collegiate tournament, Ibit utilized seven birdies in the third round to finish the tournament at 12-under-par and alone in second place among the field of 55 players, the best individual finish so far for the Flashes in the young season. Ibit finished just two strokes behind Michigan's Hunter Thomson, who claimed the individual title at 14-under-par.
Bryce Reed also had an impressive third-round performance, climbing from 13th place into the top five, finishing the tournament in fourth. Reed capped off the Canadian Collegiate with his best round of the tournament, recording a 6-under-par 66 in round three, capping off three consecutive rounds of par or better. The senior recorded eight birdies in round three to aid his ascent up the leaderboard.
The Flashes had a third player finish in the top ten as James Newton finished round three in a tie for eighth place competing as an individual. After ending his day with a round of 66 yesterday, Newton continued his momentum with a 4-under-par 68 in round three, in which he tallied five birdies and just one bogey.
Rounding out the top 20 finishers for the Flashes was Jordan Gilkison. After recording back-to-back rounds under par yesterday, the senior shot a 3-over-par 75 on Tuesday to finish the tournament in a tie for 19th place. Once again, rounding out the countable team scores in round three for Kent State was Ramiro Acevedo. The freshman fired his best round of the tournament with a 2-over-par 74 in round three to finish the tournament at 11-over-par and tied for 37th place.
The Flashes ultimately fell just short in their third-round charge up the leaderboard, finishing just six strokes behind tournament champion Notre Dame and one stroke behind Missouri and Michigan in second place.
Kent State returns to action at the Blessings Collegiate Invitational on Monday, September 30, in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The three-day event will feature both the Flashes' men and women on a mixed team and will be televised on the Golf Channel.
