Kent, Ohio- The Kent State soccer team will open the home portion of their Mid-American Conference slate on Sunday, Sept 22 when the Ball State Cardinals come into town. Kick for the game is slated for 1 p.m.
Last Time Out
The Golden Flashes (4-2-1) opened the conference portion of their schedule with a 1-0 shutout win on the road at Toledo.
Both teams played physical from the first whistle and never let up on the intensity. The Flashes held 9-3 advantage in shots in the first half, but neither side could find the back of the net. Jules Dolinski led the Flashes' attack early firing four shots at the goal.
Kent State came out of the halftime break with an abundance of energy pinging the ball all over the field. Siena Stambolich would break the dead lock in the 77th minute. Jules Dolinski played a cross into the box that was punched out by the goalkeeper but landed at the feet of Alanna Raimondo who laid it off beautifully to Stambolich for her first goal of the season.
The Flashes' back line of Allison Collins, Ava Todd, Ali Weibel, and Kelsey Salopek had a strong game, holding the Toledo attack to just six shots and only one on goal. Goalkeeper Heidi Marshall saved the lone shot en route to her second shutout of the season.
Rising in the Record Book
Alisa Arthur is rising in many categories of the Kent State record book. The senior is now ninth in both goals (21) and points (56) and is knocking on the door of being in the top 10 in assists and shots on goal.
Offensive Efficiency
Kent State has averaged just under two and a half goals per game through the non-conference portion of the 2024 campaign, good for over double their goals per game (1.14) through the non-conference potion of their 2023 schedule. In front of goal the Flashes are converting on 32% of their shots on goal, nine percent higher than their 2023 non-conference campaign (24%).
Arthur has been the catalyst for the offense, netting five goals and one assist in 443 minutes this season. Fellow forwards Samantha Miller and Josie Morgan have both found the back of the net twice so far. Other goal scorers include Thea Helen Oberhoff, Alanna Raimondo, Addy Cusick, and Ava Todd. The Flashes look to find the net against a stout Toledo defense who has allowed seven goals in seven competitions this season.
Scouting Ball State
The Cardinals (5-3-0) have won four of their last five matches. Ball State dropped its MAC opener to Bowling Green on Thursday night, falling 2-0.
Delaney Caldwell and Addie Chester pace the Ball State offense with 17 and 16 points respectively, good for first and second in the conference. Caldwell leads the way with six goals (second in the MAC) and five assists (ties for second in the MAC). Chester leads the MAC in assists with six and fifth in goals with five.
Series History
Kent State and Ball State will face off for the 38th time on Sunday. The all-time series is tied at 17 wins a piece and three draws. The two squads met last year in Muncie with the Flashes falling 3-1 to the Cardinals.
