Flashes Home Opener Spoiled

KENT, Ohio - Luke Floriea and Chrishon McCray each had a touchdown, but the Saint Francis Red Flash spoiled the home opener with a 23-17 victory over Kent State inside Dix Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Floriea backed up his career day in week one with another solid day in week two. The Mentor native grabbed six passes for 92 yards and a score and added 39 and 30 punt returns. McCray had his second highlight-level touchdown catch is as many weeks, capping a five-catch day for the wideout.
Kent State all but erased an early 17-point deficit with Tommy Ulatowski hitting McCray in the end zone and Devin Kargman connecting with Floriea from 23 yards out. The Red Flash led 20-14 at the half.
The defenses took over in the second half. Each team hit a field goal. Stephen Daley pounced on a fumble but a deflected pass in the end zone got picked off and shut down the scoring drive. Andrew Glass hit a 44-yard field goal late, but the ensuing on-side kick was recovered, and Saint Francis ran out the clock.
Rocco Nicholl led the defense with a career-high 11 stops, adding a tackle for loss and a pass break-up. Khalib Johns joined Nicholl in double figures with 10 tackles. Kam Olds led the backfield charge with a pair of sacks, three tackles for loss and a pass break-up.
The Flashes hit the road the next two weeks to close out the non-conference slate. First up is a trip to Rocky Top to take on the Tennessee Volunteers. Kickoff is set for 7:45 p.m.
